The Alex Bregman sweepstakes are likely down to five teams this winter: the Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and the incumbent Houston Astros.
Bregman’s decision has the potential to change the outlook of the entire league. If he lands with the Cubs, they could be a candidate to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League. Any of the American League teams could emerge with the AL Pennant if they land the superstar.
Chad Jennings of The Athletic recently predicted the $200 million infielder would betray the Astros and sign a deal with the Blue Jays instead. “This is the splash the Blue Jays have been trying to make for a couple of years,” Jennings wrote. “Bregman is a better fit – both short-term and long-term – than Alonso would have been, and he would give the Blue Jays one of the best infields in all of baseball alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Andrés Giménez. Bregman is basically the biggest move any team could make, and the Blue Jays are as motivated as anyone to make it.”
Acquiring Bregman would be a huge move for any team remaining in the hunt. But it might be most important for the Blue Jays. Toronto is looking to extend superstar first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and putting a winning team on the field would make that job a bit easier. Adding Bregman would make the Blue Jays much better in 2025 and beyond.
