The New York Red Bulls have signed forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, the team announced on Wednesday.
The German-born Cameroonian international is under contract until 2026, with an option for 2027. He will fill Designated Player and international roster spots.
Choupo-Moting, 35, was a free agent after previously playing for Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich. He has previously played for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and Stoke City in the English Premier League.
“We are excited to add a player of Maxim’s caliber to our roster,” said head coach Jochen Schneider. “Maxim is a great player, a winner and his experience in Europe’s top leagues will be greatly important to our club in 2025 and beyond.”
Choupo-Moting joins RBNY with 107 goals and 48 assists in 457 first-team games, having spent the first half of his career at Bundesliga clubs Hamburger SV, FC Nürnberg, FSV Mainz 05, and FC Schalke 04. He won ten titles during his time at Bayern and PSG, where he frequently competed in the UEFA Champions League.

Choupo-Moting has 20 goals and four assists in 73 Cameroon appearances. He has competed in three FIFA World Cups (2010, 2014, and 2022) and helped The Indomitable Lions finish third at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
“Maxim is a strong forward who will bring valuable experience and leadership to our club,” said head coach Sandro Schwarz. “He will be a great addition to our roster, and we are looking forward to seeing him on the pitch at Sports Illustrated Stadium.”
Choupo-Moting, like Swedish international Emil Forsberg, gives New York another veteran striker with Bundesliga experience. Last winter, Forsberg joined the team from RB Leipzig. Forsberg and Dante Vanzeir are the two RBNY DPs.
In 2024, the Red Bulls finished seventh in the Eastern Conference (47 points) and advanced to their 15th consecutive Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. They advanced to the MLS Cup presented by Audi before falling 2-1 to the Los Angeles Galaxy.
