The Premier League resumed play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a match between Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, following a two-week break for International Break. Spurs lost their third straight game by a score of 2-1, leaving fans disappointed despite the exciting play of both teams.
Manager Ange Postecoglou started with an offensive lineup in an attempt to recoup from the team’s 2-1 extra-time loss to Wolverhampton before halftime. Rodrigo Bentancur, Giovanni Lo Celso, and Dean Kulusevski provided creativity in the midfield.
Lo Celso teed up his shot and managed to deflect it off Diego Carlos to score Tottenham’s only goal of the match. It was Lo Celso’s first goal in more than three years.
Then, after a strong challenge from Matty Cash of Aston Villa, Bentancur was hurt, and things started to go south. Bentancur had to leave the game hurt, hoping to play despite his ankle injury. The crowd erupted in joy at the sight of the fan favorite, who had delighted everyone with every move.
Before the half, Villa equalized with a set piece take, with Pau Torres beating Ben Davies to the ball and squeezing it past Guglielmo Vicario’s near post.
The contrast was evident in the second half as Villa maintained their lead and Spurs were wearing thin due to injuries and bans.
Ollie Watkins and Youri Tielemans engaged in a one-two.
